MySpace News worth using

After about an hour using the beta version of MySpace News, I'm pretty sure it's going to be worth your time.

Articles from blogs and other media outlets are funneled into categories on MySpace News. Then users read and rank the articles. Yes, we've all heard of that before. The best thing is the design lets users browse from article to article and read them without really leaving the site. Very easy to use.

Still, there are problems. For example, the "journalism" topic of the site is littered with politics news that I quickly rated as "useless."

If for no other reason, check it out to learn how you can rate your content up the list and drive traffic to your own site.

Eric:

I am not a fan of Myspace, and looking at their news section I am not overly impressed. I would use Google News before I would use Myspace. The one benefit that I see from this is that Myspace being a site more geared towards the teenage population may allow teens to become more educated in current events. Although, I suspect that after all Myspace users start reading and ranking, the "top 8" news stories will all be about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

Google and MySpace have very different approaches to news selection. Google uses a computer equation to select which stories get biggger play. MySpace lets user decide.

GoogleNews is a better way to get a look at what's important. MySpace News is more akin to a most popular or most e-mailed list on a newspaper Web site.

I think they have separate purposes.
